The protests also have targeted politicians for their perceived lack of interest in ensuring safety for women and for insensitivity toward victims of sexual attacks.According to the Association for Democratic Reforms, a New Delhi-based think-tank, authorities have charged at least six actively serving members of India’s state legislatures with rape and 36 other local politicians for crimes against women including sexual abuse and assault. Two members of India’s national Parliament also have been charged with sexual abuse and assault, the association says.Prior to Mr. Brahma’s arrest Thursday, women from nearby villages took to the streets, ridiculing him in public and attempting to strip him, the official added. Television footage Thursday showed Mr. Brahma bare-chested and being slapped by a group of women on what appeared to be a village street.
