The San Diego Union

One designer who perhaps is best known for reinterpreting a style icon in the most innovative way is Karl Lagerfeld, who has always relied on the legacy of Chanel original designs and consistently breathed new life into her classic styles over the years. The Chanel ready-to-wear collection for fall 2005 is deliberately contemporary with a glamorous rock roll feel, but still honors the woman who created the famous Paris fashion house that has become a legendary status symbol.

Lagerfeld fall collection features the luxury brand signature black tweed decked out with appliqu camellias, white menswear shirts and black ties over short skirts and thigh-high lambskin boots. Lagerfeld even takes tweed knickers and turns them into elegant evening wear worn under a velvet coat and a white collared bow blouse.

Sleek, black jeans are adorned with satin ribbons at the knee and a white crepe de Chine tank top or a dinner jacket paired with leather fingerless gloves. And the quilted 2.55 handbag, created by Mademoiselle Chanel in February 1955, is once again reintroduced in black and gray aged leather with the quintessential gold and silver chains.

The little black dress is another one of Chanel visions from the past that celebrates its 80th birthday this year. Lagerfeld latest version turns up in jet tweed. A cocktail dress in black satin and ribbon is studded with small pearls, another homage to Mademoiselle Coco or was it Audrey Hepburn?

Indeed, the streamlined elegant fashions French designer Hubert Givenchy created for this ballerina movie starlet are some of this fall must-have items the sheath cocktail dress, the crisp white blouse, the full skirt, the skinny pant, the headband and the ballet flat.

This season, many designers have conjured up yesteryear heroines for their inspiration. The images of Alfred Hitchcock mysterious 1950s blondes turned up in the collections of Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and Roland Mouret. Ralph Lauren hourglass suits evoke the same era of Grace Kelly sophisticated style.

These designers create glamorous visions of screen idols with upswept hair, chic tailored suits and coats worn over belted cardigans all accessorized with top-handle frame bags and square-toe pumps. The sophisticated results prove that prim and polished is back in style.

Elsewhere, the youthquake movement of the 1960s was a springboard for inspiration this fall for designers, whether they channeled the leggy image of Twiggy, cheap nike heels, the mod style of Marianne Faithfull or the go-go model of Jean Shrimpton. The sheath dresses, military jackets, flat boots, maxi coats, berets and teased hair were all the rage in several fall collections, such as Dolce Gabbana, Christian Dior, Balenciaga and Proenza Schouler.

The bohemian look of the that we all seen over the past few seasons is still alive and well. It much more of a luxurious look now, however. But piling on the mismatched clothing and accessories is not what this fashion season is all about and you won see as much of the cleavage-baring, blingy glitz of the "Dynasty" look either. Instead, designers are in a serious mode, turning down the lights and playing a much quieter, more sophisticated tune. Related articles:
