The Veterans Memorial Park pool – which for decades has provided a cheap respite from the sizzling summer heat for thousands of low-income Jurupa-area children – won’t open for the 2013 summer swim season.
The Rubidoux-area pool is a victim of competition from a nearby waterpark, diminishing park district revenues and a requirement that it be made disabled-accessible.
“It’s sad. That pool has been a fixture in the community for so many years,” said Jurupa Valley Councilman Brad Hancock, who attended the Thursday,haikee.com, April 25,Prada handbags, Jurupa Area Recreation and Park District board meeting. Hancock sat on the parks board before being elected to the city council.
“But I understand their decision,” Hancock said.
The vote was 3-2. Board members Stephen Anderson and George R. Young dissented.
“The community in that area is better off with a pool than a waterpark,” Anderson said, referring to The Cove Jurupa Aquatic Center, a Riverside County parks facility in Glen Avon that includes a pool.
Anderson said he would prefer to phase out the pool slowly “to see if there were any interest in keeping it open.”
Board members cited the cost of making the pool compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other badly needed repairs that would add up to thousands of dollars for the park district.
“That pool has been costing the district a lot of money to operate,” said Don Davies,Gucci Bags, the board’s vice president. “But we didn’t want to use the word permanent,http://www.pilewu.com/louisvuitton.html.”
The board held out hope that if a funding source can be found to underwrite the cost of repairs,Burberry Men, the pool may re-open in 2014.
Matters came to a head this year when publicly used pools were required to install a lift to allow disabled and wheelchair-bound people to enter the pool.
“The ADA requirement is a major part of why this came up,” Davies said.
A wheelchair lift would cost an estimated $6,000,Coach Outlet, Davies said, longchamp.
Park district employees also estimated the pool would need about $30,000 in plastering work before it could be opened.
Davies and board President Richard Marcher said the hope is for the park district to transport children and people wanting swim lessons to The Cove on Mission Boulevard.
For those who looking to cool off during the summer months, there is a water feature at Glen Avon Heritage Park that is free and another water feature at Rancho Jurupa Park in the Rubidoux area of Jurupa Valley, louis vuitton outlet. Neither has a pool.
“There are alternatives in the community,” Davies said.
Davies said the pool has been a losing proposition for the park district for years and that situation worsened when The Cove opened.
“Attendance has been falling off,” Davies said. “We can’t keep taking those losses.”
