Dear Dr. Johns: We have an 11?-year-old Yorkie,Louis Vuitton bags. He has been healthy most of his life other than allergies. He is very close to our hearts, but now we have a dilemma. We are planning a six-week trip to visit our son and family in June. However, in the past, when we have left our dog with friends or boarded, he has exhibited extreme stress – eating little,foceng.com/toryburch, losing fur, barking incessantly, etc. It took him weeks to recover, and even now he becomes extremely anxious if our routine is a little different. He is always with us when we are at home, on a lap or in our bed. Would it be more stressful for us to take him on the plane with us or to board him with some responsible, kind people? If we do take him, should be have pills to relax him? My son has children, ages 3 and 1.

Thank you for your help.

Dear Kaye: I vote for taking your dog with you on the trip. It is not having you around that causes your dog the stress. If he has been beside himself even when left with friends in a home-like environment, then there will be no rest for him if you are gone. Boarding him would be even worse. The very best boarding facility cannot compare to home. Some dogs love to board, but your dog is an exception.

If you leave and he gets anxious to the point that his health is affected, you will always regret it. If he gets sick while he is with you, you can at least take him to a veterinarian and minister to him. Before you leave, take him to your veterinarian and have a good physical performed.

Check with the airline’s pet requirements,foceng.com/chanel.html. There are certain cage requirements. Some small pets can be put under the passenger’s seat. When flying with a pet, you will need an airline acclimation signed by your veterinarian within 10 days of the trip that says he is free from illness and capable of flying.

Discuss sedatives for the trip with your doctor. Valium would be good choice. It would help calm him without the risk of causing seizures. If you decide on medication, get the prescription well in advance and give your dog a dose at home on a day when you can be there and observe him,Chanel Online. If he has any problems with the medication you can take him to your veterinarian for treatment,Prada Outlet. If you wait and give the first dose before you get on the plane you risk him having a strange reaction in the air.

At your son’s house, keep him close to you and you probably won’t have any trouble. Make sure he is very comfortable with his carrier before you leave home and have some familiar blankets in it. If you go for an outing with kids that he can’t attend, oakley sunglasses, you can use the carrier as a familiar resting area until you get back.
