At age 52, the Juneau man had an attack of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease — commonly known as COPD — which caused him to struggle with every breath for four endless hours.
He never smoked a cigarette again, but the damage had been done. Doctors told him he only had a 50 percent chance of surviving for five more years. After his attack, Patterson became an anti-smoking advocate.

When Patterson responded to an email looking for subjects for a national anti-smoking campaign, he felt it was his opportunity to deliver a message about the dangers of tobacco.
“I thought they had to choose me,” he said. “I’m the one to do this.”
Patterson, a Tlingit and Army veteran, was selected in part because of his Alaska Native heritage, he said. Natives are more than twice as likely as non-Natives to smoke in Alaska, including 46 percent of Natives in the Interior.
Patterson said he was skeptical that a 30-second ad could convey the message he wanted to deliver. He first saw the commercial in a waiting room at the University of Washington Medical Center and immediately changed his mind.
“When I saw it, I kind of went into shock,” he said. “When it was finished, in a room full of people, I hung my head, closed my eyes and tears started rolling down my face.”
The ad shows photos of Patterson and his grandchildren,gucci outlet online, followed by a message he delivers with a voice cracking with emotion.
“I have a tip for you. If your doctor gives you five years to live, spend it talking with your grandchildren.
