The name Sand-Reckoner, means “sand-calculator,” which the Hammelmans say references Archimedes’ third century B.C. writing in which he calculates the size of the universe by figuring the number of grains of sand that will fill it and also alludes to the sandy loam soils of the vineyard and “the infinite calculations required to create a true wine that expresses the very sand into which our vines’ roots grow deep.”
