As designers prepare to show their Spring 2009 collections at New York's upcoming Fashion Week they'll be glad to hear this news. Despite the sluggish economy, there will still be plenty of interest in the shows. I'm hearing a lot of buzz about people being as excited as ever to have their first glimpse of the trends for next spring. I found one pretty remarkable middle class fashionista in New Jersey who's not letting finances stand in the way of fashion - seriously.

Let's put it this way: When Kimberly Givens is faced with the choice of paying her mobile phone bill or buying the perfect Fendi handbag, the phone bill loses. It gets paid, but late.

"I've always been interested in fashion and I always like to look good," explains the 40-year-old owner of the "Soultry Scissors" hair salon in West Orange. "I don't shop a lot but when I do shop, I shop for quality, " she adds. "I've maxed out my credit card to buy clothing or a bag. I have to look crisp. People are predjudiced. They want to see nice-looking people."

And although the mother of two describes herself and her husband as in the "middle income" category, this fashion diva says these tough economic times have about as much of a chance of getting in between her and fashion as her phone bill. No matter what, Givens says, she will continue to buy designer by shopping at stores that carry them at a discount.

"I stay in Century 21 and I stay in Marshalls and I stay in Woodbury Commons - you can find designers names at half the price. I also like Duet in Livingston."

A handbag-lover, Givens' collection includes not just Fendi but Marc Jacobs and Gucci creations. "I also live in consignment shops - and the Gucci I got off eBay for $100," Givens adds. "Macy's has a really nice selection and a lot of sales."

"The fashion industry is a recession-proof industry," Givens insists. Senate Democrats to introduce 12 new gun control measuresLarge disturbance reported in New Brunswick; police in riot gear called to sceneAs they play: Devils vs. Senators. Related articles:
